Addington School

Starting at Addington Early Years Centre

Once a child is formally offered a place at Addington School, starting in the Early Years Centre, we aim to make the transition process as smooth as possible. We recognise that the start of your child's Addington School journey is an emotional time for many reasons. In order to support the child and their family we offer:

  • A setting visit
  • A home visit
  • An information session and tour for parents/carers held at the Early Years Centre
  • An opportunity for the child to visit the Early Years Centre with their current key worker
  • Transition books/photo stories
  • A welcome session/stay and play on the child's first day, so that parents/carers can spend time in the school environment with their child, as well as meet other parents and class staff

All new pupils are offered phased entry, in discussion with parents/carers. New parents/carers are also invited to a coffee morning during the first term.

Addington Early Years Centre to Addington Main Site

Pupils who attend Addington Early Years Centre are supported to move to the main school site in Woodley once they reach the end of Year 1 or Year 2. Decisions around which pupils will transition each September are made by the school based on the following criteria:

  • The number of available spaces at Addington School main site in the coming academic year
  • Year 1 or 2 pupils who have been at the Early Years Centre for more than one full academic year
  • Pupils’ ages / date of birth

Our exception to following these criteria is in cases where an individual needs to move to the main site in order to have the right peer group for them.

We appreciate that transitions are an exciting and daunting time for both pupils and their families. As a school, we will work with you to support your child in their move to the main site in Woodley to ensure that they are as prepared as possible. Our transition process includes:

  • Planned visits for staff and pupils between the Early Years Centre and Addington main site as part of our standard curriculum offer
  • Regular and timely communication with parents/carers regarding transitions
  • Information session for parents/carers held at the main site regarding the transition process
  • Parent tour of the main site
  • Transition visits for pupils with their familiar staff members during the summer term
  • Opportunities for pupils to meet their new class staff and peers
  • Transition stories/photo books for pupils

Staff across the two school sites work in close collaboration to ensure continuity for our pupils.
