Explore - Adventurers - Easy Peezy Lemon Squeezy
This week we will have fun exploring chemicals reactions that happen with lemons and other ingredients.
There are 3 different activities for you to choose from:
Activity A is the easiest
Activity B is medium
Activity C is the most challenging
Activity A - lemon volcanoes
You will need a lemon, a knife (or lollipop stick), food colouring, some bicarbonate of soda.
Remember, scientists are always very careful and sensible with sharp knives. You should have an adult helping you.
Click on the picture below to find out how to make lemon volcanoes.
Activity B - lemon drops
You will need to do some careful measuring in this experiment, and if you have a pipette at home use it, if not just use a teaspoon.
- Put 1 teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda on a saucer and add drops of water very slowly until you can make a dough, then squash it into a pancake shape.
- Put 1 teaspoon of flour on another saucer and add drops of water very slowly until you can make a dough, then squash it into a pancake shape.
- Next you are going to use a pipette (or a teaspoon) drop lemon juice onto the 2 pancakes. Before you do, what do you think is going to happen when the lemon juice is dropped onto the pancakes?
Listen as you do it. Can you hear anything?
What words can you use to describe what you see?
How are the 2 pancakes different?
Activity C - turmeric and lemon experiment
This is a more complicated experiment. Print out and follow the instructions below. Don't worry if you haven't got a pipette, use a teaspoon instead.
Can you change the solution from yellow to red-brown?
